The Still Point

At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
—T.S. Eliot

The world is turning

From this vantage point turmoil appears to be increasing in every sphere we can imagine and on a global scale; political, social, economical, religious, and healthcare. We are witnessing events we never fathomed before now and processing the collective grief and trauma.

It is overwhelming, and it’s easy to feel hopeless

My hope for our world is that each of us will remember our Divine nature and begin to turn things around for the betterment of all beings, and in ways that create peace especially for those whose lives have been marginalized for so long.

As T.S. Eliot points out in his ode to the nature of time, each and every turning has a center. The poem refers to the past and future gathering in the still point of the present moment. At the center of any movement, there is stillness around which everything revolves. In this stillness is the dance, inertia, and momentum that allows all movement to take place. Nature shows us this clearly when we look at the eye of a hurricane or the center of a galaxy.

If we are mindful that we are not the spinning, we find the center

A center point that moves isn’t stable. Think of the wheel on a bike or a revolving door. Without a stable center, the bike wheel falls off and the door will not move. Just as T.S. Eliot said, we don’t call this fixity. It is not stiff or immobile. This is a place of still, stable, dancing strength.

An exercise to try

Turn off your phone, computer, TV, and any other source of potential distraction. Notice how you are sitting and bring stillness to reside wherever there is tension and unease. Allow that your thinking has the potential to be still, even if it doesn’t feel that way now.

When the body has this quality of stillness, so does the mind. When the mind has this quality of stillness, so does the body.

This stillness is your place of strength

From this place of stillness, we can reach out into the spinning world and do what needs to be done. From there, in the midst of a spiraling life, you can see the options that you have for what they are and choose how to proceed. When you leave your center and start to feel off kilter, return to that place of stillness in your own self by noticing where your body and mind could use less effort.

From this still point you can reach into the whirlwind and not be consumed

What is Reiki

The most common question I am asked in my work is, “what is Reiki?”

Reiki helps us feel more balanced regardless of what is happening around us and in our lives. Some examples include:

  • Having a diagnosed medical condition and wanting to feel better while supporting your health care

  • Not sleeping well at night and perhaps feeling sluggish during the day or adding unwanted pounds

  • Wanting to feel more engaged with your life and the things you were once passionate about

  • Seeking support from isolation and hopelessness

  • Wanting to enhance and develop your inner spiritual connection on your own terms

Reiki will help you

Reiki is a spiritual healing practice that helps your mind and body find balance. Balance is what allows the nervous system to shift gears from merely coping, to profound healing. In medical terms this balance is called homeostasis. When balance is restored the body’s self-healing mechanisms function at optimal levels. By encouraging balance, Reiki helps in any situation, even when it is not the only help you need.

Reiki is unique in that you can either receive a Reiki Treatment or learn Reiki practice from a certified Reiki Master Teacher. Once you have completed the Reiki Level 1 class I offer, you will be able to move yourself toward balance with the touch of your hand.

Balance can feel differently at different times and in different situations. If you are feeling sluggish you will feel more energized. If you are anxious you will feel more at peace. If you are in distress you will feel comfort.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, you will feel a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. You will experience physical changes associated with deep relaxation such as a lower heart rate, ease with breathing, and decreased muscle tension. During a Reiki treatment many of my clients say they reach a deep state of relaxation they are unable to duplicate on their own. The first session usually brings subtle improvements, and the benefits increase with repeated sessions.

Reiki supports any medical care you are seeking

Reiki is safe and cannot interfere negatively with any medical care you are seeking. A Reiki Treatment is considered an adjunct, complementary therapy that supports all forms of medical care including; allopathic medicine, homeopathic medicine, eastern medicine, and mental health therapies. In fact, I have given Reiki treatments to many clients going into or coming out of surgery. I have also given Reiki treatments to clients going through the process of chemotherapy infusions, and to clients who are in treatment for mental health.

When you are taking medically necessary prescriptions Reiki can help you. Again, Reiki is completely safe and the improvements you experience over time may in fact lead you to taking less medication under the supervision and guidance of your physician. I have treated clients who have reported their physicians weaning them off or completely taking them off of various medications over the course of our Reiki treatments. These types of lasting changes happen over the course of many Reiki treatments.

Since 2010, I have been practicing Reiki and providing Reiki treatments. In 2011, I traveled to Peru and Bolivia to apprentice with the indigenous healers of the Andes region. In 2012, I expanded my education to include Kinesiology and Anatomy and became a licensed massage therapist. Now I am expanding my education further to become a certified Craniosacral Therapist and have traveled to Europe to study this healing modality. Other previous education includes an undergrad degree in Business Management and Psychology from Indiana Wesleyan University.

During my training and travels, and while treating clients and teaching classes, I have worked with people from all walks of life and from a variety of different backgrounds. I have worked with people of all ages from children to end of life, and all levels of health. I have worked with beloved pets who aren’t feeling well or who are transitioning. Some of my clients are healthy and happy, and are wise enough to know what they need to do to stay that way. Others want to develop themselves spiritually and discover a deeper meaning in life. Also, many clients have sought Reiki treatments or classes realizing that balancing their system and providing homeostasis can help them cope better with a wide range of ailments or health conditions, including:

  • Cancer

  • Heart disease

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Chronic pain

  • Infertility

  • Nervous-system disorders

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Autism

  • Developmental delays

  • Chron’s disease

  • Irritable bowl syndrome

  • Brain injury

  • Emotional illness

  • Fatigue syndromes

  • End of life care & bereavement

Regardless of the challenges you face Reiki can help you, and Reiki can help you face your challenges more effectively with poise, ease, and grace.

When you receive a Reiki treatment, you will lie fully clothed on a treatment table while the Reiki practitioner places hands both lightly on and/or just above different areas of your body.

You can also learn Reiki self-treatment and offer Reiki treatment informally to friends, family, and pets in my Reiki level 1 class which includes 14 hours of in person training with me.

Before registering for a Reiki class or scheduling a treatment with a Reiki professional…

While Reiki is safe and has no medical contraindications, you should be aware that there are no standards for Reiki training or treatment, and there is an enormous diversity among professionals in terms of practice style, training, and experience. The extent of the diversity among Reiki professionals can be very confusing for the general public. Many professionals do not even agree with what the term Reiki refers to.

I encourage you to select your Reiki teacher and professional very carefully. You want to work with someone who is not only qualified, but who is a good and comfortable fit for you. Read through any prospective practitioner’s website carefully and ask questions. Any respectable Reiki professional will appreciate that you are making a careful choice, so don’t be shy in your pursuit of information.

I am a traditional Reiki Master and Teacher and I teach Reiki as the simple, accessible, and doable practice that it was when brought from Japan to the USA in the 1930s.
